Why I Became a Financial Advisor

Why I Became a Financial Advisor

May 04, 2016

For as long as I can remember, finance has always intrigued me. Even as a young boy, I was curious about how investments work and which tools and techniques were available to help people reach their financial goals. When I was 16, I remember overhearing two adults discussing investments. To a young teenager’s ears, it seemed like too good of a thing to be true, but the way the person described it — with such confidence and authority — made the memory hard to shake.

After that moment, I took an active interest in any topic regarding personal finance. I studied economics at the University of Kansas and entered the life insurance business with New York Life on January 4, 1971. After thirteen great years, I spent the next few years working with both large and small firms, from E.F. Hutton and Capital Analysts to Equity Services and First Heartland Capital. After another 16 years as an independent advisor with LPL Financial, I joined Commonwealth Financial Network in 2015, where I’ve been ever since.

Today, I am happily working as an independent advisor and running my firm, Goostree Financial Group, alongside my son, Toby. While I’ve now been in this industry for 45 years, my passion and interest have never wavered. One of the great things about having been around for so long is that I’ve been through many of the markets ups and downs. I have learned firsthand the benefits of having a long-term investment strategy.

Having worked with so many clients, many of whom have been with me for decades, there’s nothing more gratifying than seeing the plans we have shepherded so carefully play out. We are in a unique position that allows us to see the results of their sacrifices and the benefits of their good decisions and hard work.

I like to think that clients see this dedication in Toby and me, and that’s why they choose to work with us. Through our hands-on approach in creating a comprehensive plan, we want our clients to feel confident in their future and to focus on making a successful transition from where they are today to where they want to be in the future.

We also work hard to build a trusting environment. As independent advisors, we have the freedom to guide clients toward strategies that are most appropriate for them. We try our best to communicate both the good and bad news and listen carefully to our clients' needs, fears, and desires.

Although this career requires significant time to keep educated on such a wide range of topics, while also dedicating a high level of attention to each family, I can’t imagine working in any other field. While there are no guarantees when it comes to investing and finance, I always try my hardest to help my clients work toward their desired goals and stay on track with their plan.

I look forward to the many years ahead as I continue to grow my practice and help those in need. If you or someone you know is looking for a financial advisor with whom they can build a trusted relationship and rely on for lifelong guidance, I invite you to call my office or send me an email. I’d be happy to schedule a no-cost, no-obligation consultation to get to know each other and talk about how I may be able to help you.
